What is there to do in Oviedo outside of class |
 |
| |
It is absolutely true to say that Oviedo has something for everyone.
For Culture vultures: Oviedo is rich in art and culture with many museums and monuments to visit - particularly the pre-romanic churches of Santa Maria del Naranco and Miguel del Lillo. It also has many modern art galleries and opera and classical music in the Campo Amor theatre and the new Auditorium.
For Nature lovers, Asturias is a natural paradise - beautiful walks and treks in the low hills, along rivers and streams, and up in the higher mountains. There are also many nature reserves within easy reach of Oviedo.
Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the excellent facilities of the sports complexes and clubs, golf courses, hippodrome, swimming pools, and of course, skiing in the colder months.
Beach lovers will have to travel only 30-45 minutes to any one of a number of beaches - some secluded, some bursting with life.
If you are a night owl, visit the old part of Oviedo which contains some of the best Celtic bars in Spain, and many other pubs and discos which don’t close till late - normally in time for breakfast!
The city itself is a delightful mixture of old and new architecture, with many parks and green places, pedestrian areas, shops of all descriptions and innumerable cafes and bars. |

What can I do if I don’t like my host family |
 |
| |
If this should be the case, let us know immediately and we will arrange an alternative. The families hosting CBCE students have worked with us for some years, and have been carefully selected regarding both personality and the facilities they offer. Many are made up of women living alone or with children. |

How easy is it to get to know people and make friends in Asturias |
 |
| |
The Asturians are friendly people, proud of their land and always keen to introduce visitors to the local delights of cider, cheese and conversation. It is easy to get talking, and this is a perfect opportunity to practise your Spanish. Don’t forget that many CBCE courses include a number of tasks you need to carry out in the town, and these provide an excellent introduction. |

What if I fall ill while I’m there |
 |
| |
We, or your host family, will accompany you to the appropriate doctor or hospital department, and help you as much as possible.
If you are not from a European Community country, it is advisable to take out a private health insurance for the duration of your stay. |

What kind of clothes should I bring |
 |
| |
Asturias is part of Green Spain, so no matter what time of year you visit, an umbrella and waterproof jacket and shoes are a good idea! It has a temperate climate, with temperatures in summer generally reaching a comfortable 20-28ºc in the day, but can be as low as 13-15ºc at night. It’s probably better to bring various layers of clothing, and a jacket for the evenings. During the rest of the year, the temperature varies from
10ºc to 15ºc. |

How easy is it to get around the city |
 |
| |
Oviedo is quite small, and it is relatively easy to walk from one side of the city to the other. It has a cheap, comprehensive bus system,
0.75 euros a ride, and taxis are easily available, between 2 and 5 euros. There are frequent trains and coaches to all towns in Asturias, and other parts of Spain. |

How much does it cost to eat out |
 |
| |
This depends on the type of restaurant you go to, and there is a great variety to choose from. Most bars and small restaurants offer a set three course meal at lunch-time (13.30 - 15.00) for a very reasonable price,
6 - 9 euros, including house wine and coffee. Meals in the evening (from 21.00) can vary from tapas and cider in the cider bars for about
9 euros per person to 30 euros + for an excellent meal in a good restaurant.
Soft drinks or tea and coffee cost between 0.80 and 2 euros. |
