METHODOLOGY

ENGLISH COURSES

True teaching professionals are characterised by their desire for consistent up-dating and renewal of knowledge which allows them to meet the demands of society today.

Based on this premise, a team of professionals with a wide international background of teaching foreign languages has created a centre for language education which aims to offer courses of the highest quality.
CB-CE offers general and specialised courses in English and Spanish - the two most important languages in the world today. The communicative teaching methodology used is based on two fundamental objectives:

manec.gif (222 bytes) To extend students' knowledge in all areas: vocabulary, grammar, oral and written skills.

manec.gif (222 bytes) To improve students' command of written and spoken English via the use of authentic materials and tasks.

The centre syllabus is organised in blocks of three months, and assures continuous relevant and motivating learning for each student and each group. A detailed analysis of student needs on entry ensures that the student is placed in the most appropriate level.

We believe that effective language learning cannot be limited to the classroom, and so offer our students unlimited use of the self-access materials and rooms. These consist of a well-equipped library for language work, a reading room for newspapers, magazines, novels, and encyclopaedias, and A-V facilities. Students may also borrow books, videos and magazines.

We do not limit ourselves to a single teaching method, but vary our approach and activities as much as possible, taking the most appropriate from each of the many approaches available for teaching English. While an activity may seem strange at first, your teacher has a sound reason for everything s/he does, and will be happy to explain this to you if asked.

You will often be asked to work with your classmates in pairs or groups. This is a very important part of the learning process, and you should do your utmost to speak in English at all times, including when speaking about the language.

Sometimes your teacher will focus on accuracy, and correct your mistakes, and at others s/he will focus on fluency, and give you the opportunity to practise the language freely without interruption. She will however take note of areas which require further practise.

Don't be afraid of making mistakes when speaking English. Mistakes are an integral and positive part of learning a language: they show that you are experimenting with the language, and learning.

You
and
your
teacher

Your teacher's role is to offer you her knowledge of the language, her teaching experience, and her management skills, and so facilitate effective learning. However, no one can learn for you. Your success depends on YOU, and the work you do in and outside of class. Apart from attending class, your teacher will give you homework to do, and will also ask you to come and make use of the self-access facilities of the centre. You will find everything you need to practise and improve your English, such as: graded readers, vocabulary and grammar practice activities, cassettes and videos for each level, newspapers, magazines and feature films. If you wish to borrow anything to study at home, speak to one of the secretaries. Your teacher can help you select the most appropriate material.

Attendance
and
testing

It is very important that you attend class regularly. If for some reason you have to miss a class, we suggest you phone a classmate to find out what was done in class and what the homework was.

Your teacher will give periodic tests so that both of you can check your progress.
